Final Response To The Lottery

After rereading and talking about this story in class, I noticed new things about the story I hadn’t seen before. One of the things we talked about was motif, the repetition of the lottery and the black box. We see them throughout the story, this way the author makes us think about the meanings of these concepts. I think the black box symbolises death and mystery, no one knows what will come out of the box and no one knows who will die. Another interesting detail was the names of the characters, Mr.Summers and Mr.Graves working together makes it sound like there is a grave (or something grave is happening) in the summer, and this is true since the lottery is held in June. Another thing I thought was interesting was how the box was not cared for during the rest of the year and spent its time laying on a shelf, as if they didn’t want to pay any attention to it. But when summer came they got slips of paper prepared for everyone. They give so much importance to it, but still it is as if they don’t care. They still follow the tradition of killing someone, but they don’t do it in a formal way anymore. As is it is fading but everyone is too scared to let it go.
